The Pleasant Reed House was the first shotgun house built by a freed slave in the state of Mississippi and completed in its present form in 1887. In an effort to save the building, the house was slated to be relocated and restored to the grounds of the new Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi, Mississippi, which was designed by renowned American architect Frank Gehry. Working with Gehry, the Reed House was incorporated into the design of the courtyard entrance to the main museum building.
